Factory Automation
How to Automate a Factory, Step by Step
A practical order of work, from process mapping to commissioning.
Automation is a project, not a single purchase. Start small, prove the result on one line, then expand.
- Map the current process and set measurable goals
- Calculate ROI and pick the biggest bottleneck first
- Choose the automation level: semi-automatic or fully automatic
- Select sensors and actuators, then size the PLC from an I/O list
- Design safety circuits separately: e-stop, safety relays, guards
- Add HMI and SCADA, and an industrial network split from IT
- Layer on MES and IIoT for OEE, traceability and remote monitoring
- Run FAT and SAT, train operators, and keep full documentation
Fix a poor process before automating it. For older plants, retrofit sensors and start with monitoring.
